The following questions and answers about the film are conducted to examine a viewpoint from outsiders of the course we are working on. It is to understand by combining what we wrote on this blog. In this information society, it is very important to endow yourself with critical thinking over everything that reaches you. For that, we need to train ourselves. It will become one of the life skills that education can give us.

1. How do you feel about the movie after watching it? What is your first impression?

I feel that there is a need for the boy to know his ancestors. On the other hand, because the griot confuses him, he becomes distracted and is no longer doing well at school and if the griot completed the story, I think he would be satisfied and go back to school.

 2. What do you think is the main theme of the movie? Please elaborate if possible.

The theme of the film is the value of traditional beliefs in my opinion. There are some cultures which still believe in the importance of the traditions although the main idea which is passed from generation to the next can be forgotten or misinterpreted. This leads to confusion and that is the reason why many people prefer the western type of education.

3. Do you think ethnocentric education is important? Why or why not?

I think ethnocentric education is not important. This is because we are in a modern world and all what we know now is different from what our great grandparents knew. We are in a globalized world where there is increased culture interaction and thus it is difficult to make judgments according to the points of view of culture

4. What do you think that the griot in the movie is trying to do with Mabo? Have you ever had that kind of person in your life so far?

The griot is trying to warn Mabo about the modern world and how things have changed. The griot is also against the western education which has changed the various aspects of life style of families, for example her mother could not do house work without the help of a housemaid.

5. Do you realize the intension of the director of this movie after you watch it? Is he doing something meaningful or successful in doing so? To which audience does he bear in mind?

The intention of the director of the movie is to bring the comparison between the past and the present. I think he is doing a meaningful thing and the audience he bears in mind is theose who still believe in the traditions.

6. How do you feel about western education as depicted by the movie?

The movie is against the western education although it somehow brings the idea about how primitive people were like before the introduction of western education.

7. Do you know the parents of your grandparents? Were they important to you? If yes, in what way? If no, in what way?

I don’t know them. They were important to me because if they did not exist there is no way I could be existing too.
